What is a Chelsea boot?

A Chelsea boot has no laces: elastic side panels and a pull tab do the work, which is what gives it its clean line. Ours is a wholecut – the upper cut from a single piece of leather – Goodyear welted by hand in Spain onto a studded rubber sole with a 3 cm heel, fully leather lined, in calf and suede.

How to style Chelsea boots

Where Chelsea boots come from

The boot is older than its name. J. Sparkes-Hall, bootmaker to Queen Victoria, patented an elastic-sided ankle boot in 1851, made possible by newly vulcanised rubber that gave the panels their stretch. It was built for riding and walking and kept that job for a century. The name arrived later, in 1960s London, from the King's Road set who made it their own. Read our history of the Chelsea boot.
