What are opera pumps?

Opera pumps are low-cut slipper-style shoes made for one purpose only – black tie. The small bow is the whole ornament, and while some find them flamboyant, they are the true staple for tuxedo lovers: a style that has entered the 21st century pretty much exactly as it left the 19th. Handcrafted in Spain from patent leather with a black satin quilted lining, Blake stitched onto a single leather sole for a slim, close silhouette. Wear it with a tuxedo and The Silk Sock, knitted from mulberry silk, for the sheer finish that formal dress asks for; the same pair works with a dinner jacket at a wedding or a black-tie dinner. Like The Belgian, it is built on a slightly narrower last and tends to fit small – we generally recommend half a size up from your usual size in laced shoes. Keep the patent clean with a soft cloth, and store the shoes with cedar shoe trees between occasions.
