Goodyear welt

The Penny Loafer is a Goodyear welted shoe, made by hand in 128 steps. A strip of leather – the welt – is stitched to the upper and the insole, and the sole is then stitched to the welt, never to the upper itself. That means a cobbler can take off a worn sole and fit a new one without touching the upper, again and again. Between the soles, a cork filling moulds to your feet with wear.

The leather sole and the rubber sole of The Penny Loafer

Leather or rubber sole

The leather sole is a single layer of leather, finished dark with a small rubber piece at the heel. It keeps the profile at its slimmest and moulds to your foot as you wear it.

The rubber sole is thin and black, with a ribbed heel. From the side the two look almost the same, but the rubber adds grip underfoot.

Questions about The Penny Loafer

It fits large, so most people take half a size down from their usual lace-up size. In UK 6.5 / EU 40.5 / US 7.5 and below, take your usual size – half a size down tends to be too short there.

If you have a wide foot or a high instep, stay with your usual size rather than sizing down. With a slim foot, choose the smaller size if you are between two. A little heel slip in the first wears is normal – the leather and the cork filling mould to your foot.

Expect them to feel snug the first few times you wear them. The leather softens and the cork filling between the soles moulds to your foot, so the fit gets better with wear.

Box calf is smooth calfskin with a dense, closed surface that holds a crisp shape. Suede is leather buffed to a short, soft nap – more open and breathable, but it needs a protective spray. Grain leather is soft calfskin with a pebbled texture across the surface, which makes it more resistant to scuffs and creasing.

The Penny Loafer Unlined is made in reversed suede with no inner lining. Compared with our core Penny Loafer, which has a full leather lining, it is softer, more flexible and more breathable – made for warmer days. It keeps the same slim profile with a slightly slouchier look, and only comes with a leather sole.

Yes. The Penny Loafer is Goodyear welted, so the sole is stitched to the welt, not the upper. A cobbler can replace a worn sole without touching the upper, again and again – on both the leather and the rubber sole versions.

Choose the rubber sole for rainy days. Leather soles shouldn't be worn in the rain, so keep them for dry days. For suede, apply a protective spray before the first wear and refresh it regularly.

Let them rest between wears and use shoe trees to keep their shape. Calf and grain leather need a light cream now and then. Brush suede once dry, and remove dry marks with a suede eraser.
